Greenwashing in Tuna: What You're Not Being Told

TIN THE KNOW 1.1 Greenwashing in Tuna: What You’re Not Being Told

Greenwashing in Tuna: 3 Red Flags to Spot Before You Buy a Tin (or Jar)

But First... What is Greenwashing?

Green washing means making misleading sustainability claims.

To put it simply: It's pretending to be green to look good without backing it up with real action. And in the tuna aisle? There are so many that reel you in with green buzzwords and deliver anything but.

1. No Third-Party Certification

78% of Aussies eat tuna but most of it is imported, unverified and untraceable.

Any brand can say 'sustainably caught'. But without an independent certification like the MSC blue tick it's just marketing.

Recommendation: Look for the MSC blue fish tick. It's the global gold standard for sustainable seafood.

2. Buzzwords Don't Mean Sustainability

"Eco-friendly. Responsibly sourced. 100% sustainable."

These sound great but without clear proof of how, where or who? They mean nothing

Recommendation: If the claim is vague, question it.

3. If It's Just "Tuna" ... Run

If a tin just says 'tuna' with no species, catch method or location, what are they hiding? Real brands (like us) tell you:

  • What species is inside.
  • Where it was caught.
  • How it was caught.
  • We even tell you who caught it.

Bonus Truth: Let's Talk Price...

If a tin of tuna costs $1.00... ask yourself this...

How was it caught, processed, shipped to Australia, then stocked on a shelf and sold with everyone making a profit?

Spoiler: It wasn't.

Cheap fish means someone got underpaid or the ocean got overfished.
