Why Is Our Tinned Tuna Range Packed in Thailand?

When we began our journey in early 2024, the goal was clear: to make sustainable Australian tuna more affordable for every household while expanding support for Australian fishing families.

The path wasn’t without its challenges. Over 20 years ago, Australia’s canning infrastructure was sold off, leaving no large-scale onshore options or MSC-certified facilities to meet the rigorous standards required for ethical and sustainable production.

After months of research and several onshore and offshore site visits, we found a trusted service provider in an MSC-certified cannery in Thailand. This state-of-the-art facility meets the highest standards for ethical practices, sustainability, and traceability, allowing us to stay true to Little Tuna’s core values:

  • Supporting Australian fishing families by sourcing all our tuna from local fishers and sharing their stories and practices.
  • Providing Australian tuna to more Australians by making it accessible and affordable.
  • Shaping the future of Australian fisheries with a commitment to full traceability, MSC certification, and ethical practices.

This isn’t just a tin of tuna—it’s a step toward making Australian seafood more accessible, without compromising on quality, sustainability, or ethics. And while this is an important milestone, we remain dedicated to our long-term vision of growing an onshore cannery that will bring production back to Australian soil and strengthen our fishing industry for future generations.

Thank you for supporting our mission, our fishers, and our shared commitment to a sustainable future.

At last, Aussie tin tuna

Well done team, what a long journey. You did it! So grateful for an Australian tuna product..

The tuna was tasty. However I would like to know the origin and process of the 'springwater' which I presume is from Thailand. The tuna in oil was also fine, but the olive oil was a bit strong.

Dry and difficult extraction from tin

Good morning
We purchased this product to support your venture.
Whilst the tuna is fresh and nice we find it dry and difficult to remove from the tin. We won't buy it again.
We had not purchased Tuna since watching the doco BLUE some years ago, which opened our eyes to these small tins!
We don't know if this type of tuna is supposed to be dry but I've not been able to make it moist in cooking or on its own without adding olive oil.
The difficult extraction from the tin is also a problem for us.
Hope this feedback helps. Maybe these tins are just too small for poor fish that died to make it our food.

Australian tuna!

It's good tight, light in colour, clean tuna meat. The spring water allows me to add olive oil or whatever I would like and I don't have to manage the oil waste.
